Maria Callas

Maria Callas

(1923-1977) Greek-American soprano Maria Callas is a true icon who built her immense career presenting forgotten repertoire, introducing passionate acting to the opera stage, with a sense of timeless style, and not in the least by capturing the world with a voice that was so distinct that one recognises it within a second. As her colleague Montserrat Caballé put it: "Callas opened a new door for us, for all the singers in the world, a door that had been closed. Behind it was sleeping not only great music but a great idea of interpretation. She has given us the chance to do things that were hardly possible before her.”
