(1907-2003) "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun", movie legend Katherine Hepburn said, so she definitely deserves a place in our True Colours series.
Katherine Hepburn won a record of four Oscars for Best Actress, building her immense career around being independent, not only in the roles she portrayed, but also on a personal level: "I've just done what I damn well wanted to" and coming to the conclusion that "When I've been unsuccesful, I've been controlled. When I've been succesful, I've been in control." Wikipedia writes it well: "Hepburn famously shunned the Hollywood publicity machine and refused to conform to society's expectations of women. She was outspoken, assertive, athletic, and wore trousers before it was fashionable for women to do so. She was briefly married as a young woman, but thereafter lived independently. A 26-year affair with her co-star Spencer Tracy was hidden from the public. With her unconventional lifestyle and the independent characters she brought to the screen, Hepburn epitomized the "modern woman" in the 20th-century United States and is remembered as an important cultural figure."
