Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo

(1907-1954) It was only after her death that Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was recognised as one of the significant artists of the 20tth century, because during her lifetime she was mostly known because of her eccentric lifestyle. Art historian Oriana Baddeley has written that Kahlo has become a signifier of non-conformity and "the archetype of a cultural minority," who is regarded simultaneously as "a victim, crippled and abused" and as "a survivor who fights back." Besides being admired for her art, Kahlo thereby became an icon for Chicanos, feminists and the LGBT+ community.
